Scholarship
Grades are a huge factor in the Alpha Phi community here at Arizona. As Director of Scholarship, I make sure the ladies are on top of their grades and support them if they need assistance with bringing their grades up. Because we're in college, our first priority is schoolwork. The minimum grade point average requirement is a 2.75, which is one of the highest GPA requirements for sororities on our campus. Anyone under a 2.75 must complete a series of study hours tailored to their specific situation. Study hours are supervised by our Director of Scholarship and are held Sunday through Wednesday at night. This gives the ladies multiple opportunities to complete their homework and get their study hours completed so that they will be able to attend Alpha Phi events.
Study hours also have many perks as well! I award house points to the women that come to study hours who aren't required to come. I also provide yummy snacks so the girls stay motivated and power through their homework. I reinforce positive morale around the house as well by setting up something called the "No Skippy Jar". When the ladies have not missed a class for that week, they get to put their name in that jar and during chapter, I will pick a name and they will receive a gift card. A+ papers do not go unnoticed either! Anyone who did well on a paper, test, or quiz can put their paper on the fridge in the kitchen so that everyone can see how well they have done.
College is a new and exciting experience for everyone and when sorority life is thrown into the mix, it might be difficult for some people to juggle everything, especially schoolwork and that's where I come in! I am always willing to set up tutors, help with homework, and provide alternative methods for studying if things get rough for the ladies. I have a monthly meeting with a Panhellenic advisor who also assists in providing the best possible outcome for these ladies and to make their experience with Alpha Phi really special and beneficial.
